The best time for a Bosphorus cruise: season, time of day and weather

· Bosphorus Privé Team

The Bosphorus Bridge at sunset

There’s no bad season for the Bosphorus. We sail all year round, and because the yacht is booked for your group only, you choose the time, not a timetable. What changes with the season and the hour is what you see and what you wear. Summer adds swimming and the Princes’ Islands; winter means palaces seen from a heated saloon. Mornings are for breakfast on deck, evenings for the sunset and the city lights. Here’s how to pick.

The short answer

Season by season

Spring and summer

The busiest months run roughly from April–May to September–October. There are more visitors in Istanbul then, and more locals out on the water too, so it’s worth booking ahead: 2–3 days in advance gives you a wider choice. Same-day bookings are possible if a yacht is free.

Summer adds two things to a regular cruise. The first is swimming: from June to August you can swim at certain spots on the Bosphorus where it’s allowed, and the captain knows where they are. The second is the Princes’ Islands, a small group of islands off the city that feel almost like a resort in summer. You can swim off the islands, go ashore (we agree on this when you book), walk around and stop at a café or restaurant. For a day like that, see our Princes’ Islands Yacht Cruise.

Even in summer, it gets cooler on the water in the evening than on land, so bring something with sleeves.

Fall

Fall carries on the season: September and October are still among the busiest months. Swimming is over, but it’s a calm time for sightseeing, the sunset and dinner on board. Dress for the weather and bring a warm layer for the evening.

A Bosphorus cruise in winter

From November to March we still go out. Istanbul isn’t a beach resort like Antalya or Bodrum, where everything goes quiet in winter. It’s a big historic city that people visit all year, and there’s always something to see from the water: the palaces, mosques, waterside mansions and bridges are all still there, and the Bosphorus looks good in the cold as well.

Winter is where a private yacht helps. Every yacht has a heated saloon, so there’s always somewhere warm. All yachts in the Comfort+ class and above have blankets, as do almost all Comfort yachts. You can watch the shores from inside and step out on deck with a blanket and a cup of hot tea, or with your own drinks, whenever you like. If you book a guide, they tell the story from the saloon, and you can still go out on deck at any time. A guide comes with our Guided Bosphorus Cruise.

Winter photos can work too, on a good sunny day. For a photo shoot, pick the date by the forecast about a week ahead: if rain is forecast all day, there’s no point shooting.

New Year’s Eve (December 31) and Valentine’s Day (February 14) are special cases. We sail on those dates on request at a special rate, and you need to book early: for December 31, before the start of December. More in our guide to New Year’s Eve on a yacht in Istanbul.

The best time of day

Morning: breakfast on the water

In the morning the city is just waking up and you’re already on the water. On our Turkish Breakfast Cruise, the table is set right on deck: fresh pastries, cheese, olives, honey and hot tea, depending on the menu you choose. The yacht moves slowly past palaces and waterfronts, and nobody is waiting for your table. It works well if your evening is already taken, or for families with children.

Daytime: for your first cruise

If it’s your first time on the Bosphorus, go in daylight — morning or afternoon, depending on the season. Daylight shows you the details: palace façades, the old waterside mansions, Rumelihisarı Fortress on its hill. People usually book 2 to 4 hours; you can stay out for 6, but 4 hours is generally enough to see everything without rushing. For what you’ll see from each shore, read our guide to Bosphorus landmarks seen from the water.

For a first look, our Classic Bosphorus Cruise works well: its route takes in Dolmabahçe, Çırağan, Ortaköy, the Bosphorus Bridge, Bebek, Rumelihisarı, Küçüksu, Beylerbeyi and the Maiden’s Tower in 2 hours; the exact route depends on the boarding point and conditions on the water.

Sunset: when to leave

We time the departure to the sunset on your date. For a 2-hour cruise, we usually leave about 30 minutes before sunset, which is enough to watch it from the water. If you want to be at a particular spot farther away, such as the Bosphorus Bridge, or you have a special request, we leave about an hour before.

The cruise starts with warm sunset colors: the water turns gold, and palaces and mosques become silhouettes. By the end, the city’s first lights come on. How well you’ll see the sunset depends on the clouds, so we can’t promise a clear one. If you’d like this ready-made, book our Bosphorus Sunset Cruise.

Evening and night: the lights of the Bosphorus

After sunset the Bosphorus changes: lights come on along both shores, and the bridges and palaces are lit up. It’s the time for a dinner for two, a birthday or a night out with friends. On our Romantic Dinner Cruise, the table is set for two and dinner is prepared from a menu you choose in advance.

For a group evening, you can order dinner on board. You can bring your own food and drinks: on some yachts it’s free, on others there’s a small service fee.

Weather: wind, rain and storms

The captain always makes the call on whether to go out. If, in the captain’s experience, the rain or wind still makes for a comfortable cruise, we sail: there’s an enclosed saloon on board where you can sit out the rain. If it isn’t comfortable, we don’t go.

If there’s a storm or it isn’t safe to go out, we’ll move your cruise to another convenient date free of charge. Postponements don’t happen often. So there’s no need to guess the weather a month ahead: book your date, and we’ll keep an eye on the forecast as it gets closer.

What to wear

Dress for the weather and remember it’s cooler on the water than on land, especially in the evening. If it’s 20°C during the day and 10°C at night, bring a jacket. There are no rules about shoes. In winter, a warm jacket is useful for going out on deck; for a summer evening, bring something with sleeves. To compare a yacht with the public ferry and group tours, including in winter, see our guide to choosing between the Bosphorus ferry, a group tour and a private yacht.

How to choose

  1. First time in Istanbul: daylight, 2 to 4 hours, so you can see everything.
  2. A date or an anniversary: the sunset, or dinner after dark.
  3. Family with children: morning or afternoon; children count as full passengers.
  4. You’d like a swim: summer, June to August — for example, a day at the Princes’ Islands.
  5. Visiting in winter: go anyway — it’s warm in the saloon, and the shores are the same.
