How to propose in Istanbul: timing, places and a plan on the water
· Bosphorus Privé Team

For a proposal in Istanbul, a private yacht gives you something a restaurant can’t: no one else on board except the crew. Aim for sunset and the hour after it, when the city lights come on. The place to ask is the Bosphorus Bridge, where your own words can appear in laser light. Here’s how to pick the time and place, keep the secret and get everything ready.
Why the water and not a restaurant
A restaurant or a rooftop always comes with an audience: waiters, other tables, people lining up for photos. On a private yacht, the only people around are the crew and anyone you invite. You choose the moment instead of waiting for the right table.
And the scenery takes care of itself. In one evening you pass palaces, mosques and waterside mansions — the old homes of Ottoman families, built right at the water’s edge. When the time comes, you’re already at the bridge. Nobody has to go anywhere, and the cruise itself explains why you’re there.
When to go: sunset, evening or night lights
Sunset and early evening are the obvious choices. We set the departure time by the sunset on your date. Usually we leave about 30 minutes before sunset, which is enough to watch it from the water. If you want to be at a particular spot farther away by sunset, such as the bridge, we leave about 1 hour before.
How clear the sunset will be depends on the clouds, and nobody can promise it in advance. After dark, though, the bridge and the shoreline light up, and the Bosphorus at night looks good in any weather the captain is happy to sail in.

Where on the Bosphorus to propose
The exact route depends on the boarding point and conditions on the water, but a few places work especially well for a proposal.
| Place | Why it works |
|---|---|
| The Bosphorus Bridge | Lit up in the evening; this is where we project your laser message |
| Ortaköy Mosque | A small mosque at the water’s edge with the bridge behind it — one of the city’s best-known views |
| The Maiden’s Tower | A tower on a tiny island at the entrance to the Bosphorus, with the old city skyline behind it at sunset |
| Bebek and Rumelihisarı | Quieter, with waterside mansions and the walls of an Ottoman fortress |

The bridge is the natural place to ask: the message appears on the bridge, and that’s your cue. If you’d rather keep it quiet and skip the message, ask us to plan the route toward Bebek and Rumelihisarı.
Tell us how you picture the evening — we’ll suggest a departure time and the right spot to ask.
Chat on WhatsAppHow to keep it a surprise
The hard part isn’t asking. It’s making sure your partner doesn’t guess first.
- Give a reason for the cruise. Call it a sunset cruise, dinner on the water or an anniversary treat. A cruise on the Bosphorus is reason enough on its own.
- Keep the planning off shared devices. We work out the plan, the timing and the laser text with you on WhatsApp, so everything is ready when you board.
- Flowers. If flowers are part of your booking, we buy the bouquet in advance and hand it to you right before the moment, so you don’t have to carry it across the city.
- The ring. Keep it in an inside jacket pocket, not your pants pocket, where the box shows. Decide in advance when you’ll take it out.
- Clothes. It’s cooler on the water in the evening than on shore. Suggest bringing a jacket — that won’t give anything away.
Photos and video
The moment itself lasts a few seconds, and you can’t film it yourself. You can add a photographer and video as extras. Agree in advance where the photographer will stand and what signal to wait for. That way the shots look natural and the surprise stays a surprise.
After the “yes”
Once you have your answer, the cruise goes on — now it’s a celebration. You can add dinner on board, a cake, live music or flowers. If you want a separate dinner for two on the water, take a look at our Romantic Dinner Cruise: 2 hours, from €250. You can bring your own food and drinks: on some yachts it’s free, on others there’s a small service fee.
Weather and a backup plan
The captain always makes the final call on going out. Light rain or wind that the captain considers comfortable is no problem: every yacht has an enclosed, heated saloon, and most yachts have blankets for guests. If there’s a storm or it isn’t safe to go out, we’ll move your cruise to another date free of charge. So keep your plan flexible enough to work if the date moves by a day or two.
Season: winter works too
We sail year-round. The Bosphorus is beautiful in winter too, and it’s warm inside: you can step out on deck in a blanket for the moment and go back into the saloon afterward. We also sail on New Year’s Eve (December 31) and Valentine’s Day (February 14), on request at a special rate. Book these dates well in advance — demand is high.

A ready-made option with a laser message
If you’d rather not organize it all yourself, there’s our Marriage Proposal Yacht Experience. It includes a laser message with your own text, a bouquet of 25 roses, and help planning and coordinating the surprise. The price is for the whole package, not per person; VAT (KDV) is not included.
If you just want a sunset cruise and plan to handle the surprise yourself, the Bosphorus Sunset Cruise is 2 hours, from €180, and you can add flowers or a photographer separately. You can also choose a yacht for the evening from our yachts page; our guide to Istanbul yacht rental prices explains what drives the cost.

- Check the forecast and bring something warm for the evening.

A guide, catering, a photographer or videographer, decorations, live music, transfers and more. What’s available depends on the yacht and date.
